Our lives are like a blank canvas. We are born fresh, clear, and untainted. We know nothing that lies ahead and so we live each day in awe and wonder; exploring this world and all that’s in it. We spend each moment fascinated by the simplest things- a leaf, a blade of grass, a worm, a ladybug, a ray of sunshine. At what point does this fascination shift from awe and wonder over to ‘mmh’? When do we stop allowing ourselves to be amazed? Is it a choice we make or a choice that is made for us? Maybe we begin listening to people that have lost their appreciation of wonder. People that say, “grow up”, “it’s nothing special”. In Genesis, it tells of God looking at creation and saying what he saw was good. I’m humbled as I allow that reality to wash over me. God, the all-powerful deity, stopped to look at the ocean He had just created and said, “Wow, that’s pretty.” I think of my boys bringing me acorns and weeds, so proud of the beautiful things that they have found for their mother, only to hear a halfhearted, “ok thanks” as I reluctantly take the item knowing I’ll discard it shortly after. I’m not saying I’m going to start saving every thing my boys now hand me but I realize I should start savoring them, appreciating them fully in that moment. It’s not about valuing the items. It's about stopping and taking a moment to appreciate something. And God knows we could use an appreciation of simplicity in this fast paced, bigger is better, world we live in. Be the change...stop and appreciate something little today.Nicole Donoho, owner of Teddyfly LLC, enjoys writing stories for all ages.
